"nothing is original"....even this assertion is trite in and of itself going along with this statement... :sigh: :(.. we are in the age in which everyone is trying to be "original"..to such a point that being "unique" is a fad and nearly conformity. "Being original" is "in", so hot this season!
This quote is so judgemental. R personal connection to the ppl/ideas/quotes make us unique, no one is an exact copy of someone else. Putting aside the fact that there r ppl who try to be "original"/"unique", there is ALWAYS s/t that makes each of us different. R strengths/weaknesses/experiences r unique to ourselves in some way or another.
i felt like its saying that we dont really try to figure out who someone else is, we just boil them down to a few sentences and thats it. like, oh, thats beeta, shes iranian and is going to texas next year. oh, thats so-and-so, they really like to paint. etc. you know?
but i see what you mean. you took it as saying most people copy other people?
i interpreted it like afnan did, that it implies that no one is original..but i don't think its negative. it just means that there isn't really anything original in this world, which i think is true. when you have an opinion, how many other people share it?
It could be judgmental in the sense of groupthink, where everyone shares the same opinions because they're afraid to think outside what society has sanctioned as acceptable...but that happens too.
this quote seems to be saying that ppl. don't think for themselves, they follow what others tell them to believe, similar to the way in which ppl blindly follow whatever rush limbaugh says b/c he's a "trusted source" as opposed to critically analyzing the garbage he spews. but in response to what you all were talking about:
"There are only a few notes. Just variations on a theme." — John Lennon :)
Well looking @ it from a sociological point of view, we are all socialized to think, act, believe, etc in a certain way. That's just how socities work. But I think Afnan is right. We all interpret things differently. We all find our own meaning of various events. Children growing up in the same house, with the same income level, cultural upbringing, etc don't think or act in the same way. So how can Mr. Wilde's opinion be valid??? I think you can accuratly say that people in a society may think and act simialrly but not exactly the same. And plus, in reference to his accomplishments Albert Einstein said that he stood on the shoulders of giants. Meaning that he could not have achieved success without all the scientists that cam before him. So what's wrong with taking from another, and building upon it? Or interpreting it differently???

okay now im thinking i completely misread the quote, only because of the mimicry statement.

I think this quote is notable because it states a reasonable and fairly true claim in a unique way. Authenticity is a rarity.

hmm...i feel like the word mimicry makes it negative- since wen is mimicking someone a good thing?
