Wizard of Oz, 1939

Glinda
Well, I'm a little muddled. The Munchkins called me because a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East.
And there's the house, and here you are, and that's all that's left of the Wicked Witch of the East.
And so, what the Munchkins want to know is - are you a good witch or a bad witch?

Dorothy:
But I've already told you, I'm not a witch at all. Witches are old and ugly. What was that?

Glinda:
The Munchkins. They're laughing because I am a witch. I'm Glinda, the Witch of the North.

Dorothy:
You are! I beg your pardon! But I've never heard of a beautiful witch before.

Glinda:
Only bad witches are ugly.

  1. has anyone seen wicked? the whole story is about the wicked witch, why she's green, who glinda is, how she met the "wicked witch" (and btw, glinda's name was originally galinda, but later shortened to glinda), and where the ruby red slippers came from.

  2. isnt beauty in the eye of the beholder?? If so, if someone is ugly to you-- does that speak more about YOU, the beholder, than them????

  3. it is in real life but not everyone subscribes to that idiom...in this instance two characters affirm the "ugly" judgment so it appears to be taken out of the context of the beholder and transformed into a universal judgment ...my question is what is the author implying when he makes that judgment?

  4. i just showed this to my friend and she asked "wtf, is that suppose to mean that they couldn't tell if dorothy was beautiful or not? she was obviously too pretty to be a bad witch."

so true! by glinda's logic, there should have been no question...!
