Priest

trying to figure out what this means

the soldier appears charming, like american diplomacy, proposing something she doesn't want, as the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are unwanted. the stated objective is to win over "hearts and minds" as he is declaring his intentions to her. the woman in the niqab has become a symbol for the middle east and the muslim world despite how few women there wear it.

  1. ...hm, what's interesting is that rather than a ring, i thought he had a grenade in his hand. Which, would make sense if he's proposing a war against her country/religion.

  3. also, Importantly noted
    1. she is wearing nice heels and they are shiny.
    2. middle east is a woman? since when? Whenever something "needs to be conquered", a woman is portrayed. Wow, this is not new.
    3. the man represents America. masculine politics?

  8. ok, I wrote an insanely long response to this. but my internet was down when I attempted to post.

"women always have the upper hand"

This was more or less a random sarcastic statement I made, and now, am forced to clarify.

A wedding proposal has a lot of cultural and regional connotations attached to it, in which I will list 2 categories:
    1. fairy-tale (princess/commoner), man is being chivalrous. Physically lowering himself to that lower than the woman. Concept of kneeling, as a common man bowed to a royal.
    2. the ultimatum. A woman is restricted to answer a yes/no question and the power of deciding when, where, and if to propose this question lies with the man only*. And also in the heat of the moment is often forced to say yes.

in 1, the woman has the upper hand. in 2, the man has the upper hand in the proposal. It just depends how it is looked at.

back to the picture, All i was doing, was observing..

I feel like the artist really complicates the concept of proposal with cultural and regional symbols (a niqab to represent the middle eastern muslim oppressed woman, and a US navy boy, popular of 40s-'50s propaganda)
